How to play Snakes and Ladders

Take a moment with Snakes and Ladders before moving to another game. Reach square 100 exactly. A roll past 100 leaves the token where it is. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Make your first input carefully and watch the result. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Try a deliberate move

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Reach square 100 exactly. A roll past 100 leaves the token where it is. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Take a moment to understand the current position.

Step by step

  1. Player 1 rolls first, starting before square 1.
  2. Move the number of squares shown by the die.
  3. Follow a snake or ladder when landing on its starting square.
  4. Alternate turns until one player reaches 100.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

A useful example

From square 98, rolling 2 wins. Rolling 3 overshoots and leaves the token at 98. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Keep the game’s format in mind.

Watch out for this

A roll of six does not grant an extra turn in this version. Check the rule before repeating the action. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
