How to play Word Deduction

Open Word Deduction, check the instructions and begin a round. Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Use the example below to understand a decision. Check the rule that explains your first action. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Guess a five-letter answer from the included collection. Entries must contain five letters; accepted guesses are not checked against a complete dictionary.

Read before acting

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Follow this game’s rules rather than another version’s.

Step by step

  1. Enter five letters.
  2. Green marks the correct position; gold marks an available copy elsewhere.
  3. Grey means no matching unused copy.
  4. Use the feedback to solve.

Controls

Type a guess and press Check guess or Enter. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

A useful example

An answer containing one E can award only one positive E mark in a guess containing two. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

Repeated letters do not imply unlimited copies in the answer. Compare the situation with the worked example. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
